The Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital has done it: it has successfully completed the crowdfunding campaign for the HORAO project. Now the HORAO team is preparing the competition. It is designed to motivate research and development teams worldwide to develop a microscope that allows surgeons to see tumors even better.

The team led by neurosurgeon Prof. Philippe Schucht, MD, Senior Physician at the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, had 45 days to reach the target sum of CHF 50,000 on the Swiss crowdfunding platform wemakeit. After just 29 days, they had reached their goal ahead of schedule, and the HORAO team could breathe a sigh of relief. By the end of the campaign at 5 p.m. on Monday, September 18, 2017, a total of CHF 69,060 had been raised. «We are overwhelmed by the generous support for our project and would like to thank all donors very warmly for their financial help,» says Philippe Schucht.

The crowdfunding project was a novelty for the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital. Prof. Andreas Raabe, MD, head of the clinic and a professor of neurosurgery, notes: «HORAO's success shows us that it is worthwhile to think outside the box when looking for ideas. Thanks to the successful crowdfunding, we can now motivate researchers around the world to think about our problem, including and especially outside the usual medical research.»

Phase II: Global crowdsourcing challenge

With the end of the wemakeit campaign, the HORAO project is entering phase two. The HORAO team is now preparing the global competition between research and development teams. The money raised on wemakeit will be awarded to the winner of this competition. «Our goal remains to work with the brightest minds to develop a technology for a microscope that visualizes healthy tissue so that we neurosurgeons can better distinguish this healthy tissue from the tumor. A technology that will make brain tumor surgery even safer in the future,» emphasizes Philippe Schucht.
