The Department of Neurosurgery received 45 project submissions from 23 different countries for its award-winning HORAO project in the global crowdsourcing competition. Up to five winning projects will be invited to Bern in March 2019 to present their proposed solutions at the HORAO conference. Only then will the definitive winning project be determined.
The team led by neurosurgeon Prof. Philippe Schucht, MD, Senior Physician at the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, is looking for a solution to help neurosurgeons better identify brain tumors during surgery and make brain tumor surgery even safer. To this end, the HORAO team launched a global crowdsourcing competition in June of this year, following the successful completion of an initial crowdfunding phase last fall. The competition ended successfully last Friday evening.
Overwhelming interest around the globe
A total of over 10,000 people have shown an interest in the HORAO project. More than 270 researchers and 18 teams from over 30 countries on all continents of the world have taken part in the competition. By the end of the submission period, they had submitted a total of 45 projects from 23 different countries on the crowdsourcing platform herox.com – from Finland and Germany to Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mexico, Canada and the United States.
Decision will be made at the HORAO conference
A selected jury of renowned experts will now nominate up to five projects. The responsible parties will then be invited to present their proposed solutions at the public HORAO conference on March 14, 2019, as part of the Brain Week in Bern. The winning project will not be definitively determined until this conference, and the money raised in crowdfunding will be awarded as prize money.
